WCPOM’s 2018-2019 Philanthropic Cause
Will County Parents of Multiples has chosen to support our very own member, Susan Hoffman and her family. Susan was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in October, 2017. After extensive treatments at Loyola Hospital, she had a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant in March 2018, as the doctors feel that this is the best way to keep the leukemia from recurring. Fortunately her brother was a perfect match! As part of the recovery from the transplant, Susan could not live with the kids for a total of 100 days. Much of that time had to be spent at a hotel close to Loyola, which was not covered by insurance. The treatments required her to stay at Loyola for a grand total of 3 months, plus the 3 months at a hotel. The financial burden of all of that has been overwhelming. The administration at Susan's job could not hold her position during her recovery. Susan's husband was out of work for year. Thankfully, the transplant seems to have been a success, although she is dealing with a myriad of side effects, as her new cells fight with the old cells. Another 4 day hospital stay was required in October to get some of the symptoms under control. Susan is most likely not able to get back to work (or search for a new position) for at least another 6 months, as her immune system is still developing. Any financial help to assist them with the cost of the hotel and all of their other medical bills that still pour in would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, this has been a rough road for the Hoffman Family. Susan was away from her three children for a total of 6 months. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, as well as the kids' birthdays were all celebrated either at the hospital or the hotel during their brief visits. As Susan wrote to us: "The support, both emotional and financial, that we have received from WCPOM has been unbelievably heart warming. I am so very grateful to have these MoMs on my side. They have been amazing cheerleaders and have supported me in ways I could never have imagined. I hope to somehow one day repay all of the kindness shown to our family."
WCPOM’s philanthropic efforts for 2018-2019 will be focused on continuing to support the Hoffman family.
